Bright Blue, Like New: Cyanotype Printing Workshop with EPFC

92 million tons of textile ‘waste’ are thrown into the world’s landfills each year. As sustainable methods of disposal and reuse gain popularity, you may be considering the possibilities for restoring purpose to your own unwearable or unwanted clothing. Bright Blue, Like New provides the space and materials to explore a new way to upcycle outworn, outgrown, or outmoded garments: cyanotype graphic printing. Participants are invited to bring any and all fabric constructions that are light in color (beyond clothes, plain tote bags and linens work too!) and will be given the opportunity to trade amongst themselves and/or choose donated garments from a large selection collected by the workshop’s organizer. Cyanotype emulsion, the chemistry that constitutes a light-sensitive printing process nearly 200 years old and counted among history’s first photographic practices, will be provided, along with rubber gloves and an assortment of mix-and-match, collage-friendly graphics. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own digital images or flat objects (think: leaves and flowers, chains and other hardware, stencils and utensils) with which to make graphics of their own. Participants should be sure to wear clothes they don’t mind staining irreversibly — or bring aprons!
