“Throughout my life, I've explored notions of moving between worlds, adaptation and finding my own place in the greater world. These ideas express themselves in this new group of paintings, using bold colors, graphic forms and gestural brush and linework to construct an imagined, busy town-esc, architectural landscape. The individual paintings are abstract representations of cars, buildings, billboards and other things you see in a city. On their own they might be difficult to read specifically as something familiar, but in the overall context it makes sense. The world can be anything you want it to be, it doesn’t have to look like what’s presented to you. You could have something like a library that’s also a music venue that offers classes on nature conservation, if you make it.

The work in this show is a departure from my usual clean lined representational illustrations. It’s been an exercise in trying to tap into what I call “big kindergartener.” There’s a period of time as a kid artist where you don’t worry too much about if it looks like the thing you’re trying to draw; it just comes out naturally. The work in the show leans on natural action and creative intuition and allows that to guide the paintings in unexpected directions.” - Paul Windle
